President Autographs Items at All-Star Game for UMPS CARE Auction

President Obama visited with the Major League Baseball All-Star Umpiring Crew before the game in St. Louis this past week. President Obama, his aide Reggie Love, a few Secret Service personnel and five Major League Baseball officials — including Commissioner Bud Selig — squeezed into the umpires’ room to meet umpires Dana Demuth, Brian Gorman, Jeff Kellogg, Angel Hernandez, Tim Timmons, and Paul Nauert.

The President signed two commemorative jerseys and All-Star home plates that will be auctioned off in the upcoming months. All proceeds will benefit UMPS CARE Charities.

Alan Schwarz of the New York Times wrote a brief article about the President's meeting with umpires. Click for the New York Times article.

Comments from Ronald Mumford, Wendy's Wonderful Kids Adoptions Recruiter

Mr. Culbreth, Thank you so much for the opportunity to participate in the UMPS CARE Charities ticket program on June 7th.  You were very engaging with the kids and even though we waited through a lengthy rain delay, everyone had a wonderful time.  Also, I would wish to express our appreciation of Ms. Angela Smith of the Marlins for meeting us and taking us to meet with you.

This event was especially gratifying because this was the first baseball game for Eric and Alex. Thanks again for a very special day.

Comments from Deirdre Madden (Wendy's Wonderful Kids Recruiter)

On June 7, 2009, WWK recruiters Lindsey and Deirdre had the opportunity to take Raffi, Raekwon, Angel, and Mark to watch the Red Sox take on the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park in Boston, MA.  As the group stepped out onto the field from the same hallway used by the major league players, the boys’ mouths all dropped as they took in the view of Fenway at field level! The entire group had a fantastic time participating in the fan activities in the stands, screaming “Youk” as Kevin Youkilis stepped to the plate each time, and hoping for Big Papi to hit it out of the park with each at bat.  The boys had a fabulous time at the game and it was easy to see that they all felt special to be able to participate in the events of the day since most people don’t get the same opportunities.   Thanks for an awesome day Umps Care!!

Video of Umpire's Hospital Visit in Tampa

The following was written by Larry Perkins, 10 Connects Multi Media Journalist, Tampa FL

Umps "bear" all for kids
May 19, 2009

Tampa, Florida - Kids, stuffed animals and umpires were a major league hit at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital Tuesday morning. Umps Care Charities, Major League Baseball and Build-A-Bear Workshops brought a little cheer to children and their families who are coping with serious injuries and illness.

Four well known MLB umpires, Randy Marsh, Mike Winters, Lance Barksdale and Alfonso Marquez, all working the Rays game this evening, took time to visit the rooms of young cancer patients.

With stuffed animals in-hand, the umps handed out the furry friends to smiling kids and their families. Each patient chose their favorite outfit for their new adopted friend. Unofficially, the fireman's turnout gear appeared to be the favorite uniform.

Randy Marsh, an umpire from Northern Kentucky, said,"It's a way for us to give back." Growing up across the river from Cincinnati, in Covington, Marsh says his humble beginnings puts a special place in his heart for those less fortunate who find themselves in difficult circumstances.

The Umps Care Charities was founded in 2006. This is the 31st hospital visited by the umpires, handing out more than 2,500 Build-A-Bears to children across the country.

GUEST COMMENTS
Thank you so much!!!! Thank you to Ted Barrett for being one of the kindest men I have ever met. I read Ted's bio from the internet before going so I was able to share with the boys that he was also a minister. One of our sons is about to be baptized and knowing that such a big "cool" man loves God made him feel even bigger himself.

The boys were proud to be on the field and grinned ear to ear when we sat in our seats because the ushers welcomed us as the "Umpires family". Their Tampa Bay Rays hats are part of their wardrobe now.

Thank you to the umpires and the Tampa Bay Rays for making this possible. It was an amazing red-carpet experience for the kids - important because few people have shown that they care for them.

Sincerely,
Roe Pierce and Gang

GUEST COMMENTS

Dear Jeff, Bob, Mark, and Tim,

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Our kids had a blast last night!! They were so excited to meet with you, hang out in the locker room, try on the equipment, and then get to go down onto the field. That was incredible. And the seats you gave us were excellent, wow. The whole evening was fabulous, we can’t thank you enough. I know it took a lot of coordinating to make it happen, and I want you to know how much we appreciate everything you and the Orioles did for us. Thanks again – our kids will be talking about this forever!!

All the best,
Karen Gruebnau

GUEST COMMENTS
Dear Sam and Dan,

We had such a good time at the game on Saturday. It was a beautiful day; not too hot or too cold. Kevin and Greta really enjoyed going down to the field and walking past all of the jerseys of retired Dodgers! Both Kevin and Greta play baseball and have been long time Dodger fans. Greta was anxious to feel the grass on the field because it looks so cool on TV! Kevin was excited to meet you guys and asked you if it was hard to ump behind home plate.

Sam, the kids got a big kick out of having you introduce them to Larry King. We had great seats, ate Dodger dogs, and snacked on all of the goodies in goody bag! The best part was the Dodgers WON!! Thank you so much for all you do for the kids. You're the best!

Sincerely,

GUEST COMMENTS
I want to give a BIG thank you to the umpires for the great time we had at the Angels game on Saturday. I was able to bring a very special sibling group of three with me. Boy did they have fun.

The kids loved the tour of the stadium. I have to say the highlight for the kids was when Ted Barrett and Greg Gibson took them on the field and showed them around. Needless to say, the guys made quite an impression on the kids. As if that wasn't enough, we had great seats to watch the game.

While those around us called out the names of their favorite players, Ana, the youngest of the siblings waved her arms in the air and called out to Mr. Barrett. "He's working," her older brother told her. With hands on hips Ana replied, "he told me to wave to him, so I'm wav'en."

They ate hot dogs and nachos and laughed about throwing their peanut shells on the ground. It was a wonderful day. One that would not have been possible without this great charity and the umpires who are involved in it.

Thank you,
Sarah Hutson

Mike Di Muro Hosts Lunch with an Ump

MLB Umpire Mike Di Muro hosted "Lunch with an Ump" on April 18 in Seattle. Lincoln Missner won the lunch opportunity during the 2009 Golf Classic Online Sports Auction. Lincoln and his friend Brian spent an hour with Mike at lunch and also received two tickets to the Mariners game that evening. Lincoln, on behalf of all Major League Umpires, thank you for bidding and supporting of the UMPS CARE Charities youth-based programs.

COMMENTS FROM LINCOLN MISSNER
"Lunch with Mike was fantastic. It was really cool talking baseball, and Mike was very open with us and gave us a good perspective on being an MLB umpire. My friend Brian enjoyed it so much he is looking to start umpiring himself and has a newfound respect for sports officials as a whole. "
